Joyce Beatty is a Democratic Representative from Ohio's 3rd District who previously served as the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus from 2021 to 2023.
Background
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Joyce Beatty earned a Bachelor of Arts in speech from Central State University and a Master of Science in counseling psychology from Wright State University. Before her time in elected office, she served as the Montgomery County health and human services director and later worked as the senior vice-president for outreach and engagement at Ohio State University. She has also been a national spokesperson for the American Heart Association and led the Columbus Urban League Board.
Political career
Before entering federal office, Joyce Beatty served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1999 to 2008, where she held the role of minority leader. She was first sworn in as the U.S. representative for Ohio's 3rd congressional district in 2013 after winning the 2012 general election. A member of the Democratic Party throughout her career, she also served as the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus from 2021 to 2023.
