About
Michael Baumgartner is a Republican Representative from Washington's 5th District who previously served as a diplomat and economics officer at the United States Embassy in Baghdad.
Background
Born in Pullman, Washington, Michael Baumgartner earned a degree in economics from Washington State University and a master's degree in public administration from Harvard University. Before entering politics, he volunteered on a Jesuit mission in Mozambique and served as an economics officer for the U.S. State Department at the embassy in Baghdad during the Iraq War. He also worked as a civilian contractor in Afghanistan, where he focused on counternarcotics efforts by encouraging farmers to transition from poppy to food crops.
Political career
Michael Baumgartner served in the Washington State Senate from 2011 to 2019 and later held office as the Spokane County treasurer. A member of the Republican Party, he was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 2025 after winning the 2024 general election to represent Washington's 5th congressional district. He previously sought federal office as his party's nominee for the United States Senate in 2012.
