About
Tom Cole is the Republican U.S. Representative for Oklahoma's 4th District and the longest-serving Native American in the history of Congress.
Background
Tom Cole was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and is an enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation. He earned a bachelor's degree from Grinnell College, a master's degree from Yale University, and a PhD in British history from the University of Oklahoma. Before entering politics, he conducted research as a Fulbright Fellow and worked as an assistant professor of history and politics.
Political career
Before entering federal office, Tom Cole served in the Oklahoma Senate from 1988 to 1991 and later as the 26th secretary of state of Oklahoma from 1995 to 1999. A member of the Republican Party, he was first sworn in to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2003. He has represented Oklahoma's 4th congressional district since that time and is the longest-serving Native American in the history of Congress.
