Background

Emanuel Cleaver II was born in Waxahachie, Texas, and grew up in public housing in Wichita Falls. He graduated from Prairie View A&M University in 1972 and later earned a Master of Divinity degree from St. Paul School of Theology. Before entering politics, he founded a branch of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Kansas City and served as the pastor of St. James United Methodist Church from 1972 to 2009.

Political career

Emanuel Cleaver began his public service career on the Kansas City Council, where he served three terms from 1979 to 1991 before being elected the 51st mayor of Kansas City, Missouri. He served two terms as mayor from 1991 to 1999, becoming the first Black person to hold that office. A member of the Democratic Party, he was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 2005 and is currently serving his 11th term representing Missouri's 5th congressional district.
