Representative Yvette D. Clarke is a Democrat representing New York's 9th District who previously served on the New York City Council in the first mother-to-daughter succession in that body.
Background
Born on November 21, 1964, Yvette Clarke worked as a childcare specialist and trained community residents to support working parents before entering public service. She later served as an assistant to New York State Senator Velmanette Montgomery and Assemblywoman Barbara Clark. Her professional experience also includes roles as the director of business development for the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation and as a director for the New York City Empowerment Zone.
Political career
Before entering Congress, Yvette Clarke served as an assistant to state legislators and worked in economic development before being elected to the New York City Council, where she represented the 40th district from 2002 to 2006. She has served as a member of the Democratic Party in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2007, originally representing New York's 11th congressional district. Following redistricting, she began representing the state's 9th congressional district in 2013.
