About
Diana DeGette is the Democratic U.S. representative for Colorado's 1st district and has served as the dean of Colorado's congressional delegation since 2007.
Background
A fourth-generation Coloradan, Diana DeGette was born in Tachikawa, Japan, while her father was serving in the armed forces. She graduated from Colorado College with a bachelor's degree in political science before earning her Juris Doctor from the New York University School of Law in 1982. After completing her education, she returned to Denver to practice law with a focus on civil rights and employment litigation.
Political career
Before her election to federal office, Diana DeGette served as the Colorado State Representative for the 6th district from 1993 until 1997. A member of the Democratic Party, she was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 1997 and has represented Colorado's 1st congressional district since that time. During her tenure, she served as a Chief Deputy Whip from 2005 to 2019 and became the dean of Colorado's congressional delegation in 2007.
