Background
Maxine Dexter grew up in Bothell, Washington, and earned her bachelor's degree in political science and communication from the University of Washington. She remained at the same institution to complete her Doctor of Medicine before serving her medical residency in Aurora, Colorado. Prior to her election to public office, she moved to Portland in 2008 and established a career as a pulmonologist and critical care medicine specialist.
Political career
Maxine Dexter began her political career in the Oregon House of Representatives, where she represented the 33rd district from 2020 to 2024. A member of the Democratic Party, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives on November 5, 2024, after winning a primary for Oregon's 3rd congressional district earlier that year. She has served as a U.S. representative since 2025, representing a district that includes most of Portland east of the Willamette River.
