Background
Born on September 27, 1954, Adriano Espaillat is the first formerly undocumented immigrant to serve in Congress. Before entering elected office, he worked as a coordinator for the New York City Criminal Justice Agency and served as a state-certified conflict resolution mediator. He also directed the Washington Heights Victims Services Community Office and led Project Right Start, a national initiative focused on substance abuse prevention.
Political career
Adriano Espaillat served in the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate before his election to federal office. A member of the Democratic Party, he was first sworn in as the U.S. representative for New York's 13th congressional district in 2017. He is the first Dominican American and the first formerly undocumented immigrant to serve in the United States Congress.
