About
Cleo Fields represents Louisiana's 6th congressional district, having returned to the House in January 2025 after a 28-year absence. An attorney educated at Southern University, Fields first served in Congress from 1993 to 1997, representing Louisiana's 4th district. Between his congressional tenures, he served in the Louisiana State Senate on three separate occasions, most recently winning re-election in 2019. His return to Congress came after federal courts ordered the creation of a second majority-Black district in Louisiana to comply with the Voting Rights Act.
Fields serves on the House Committee on Financial Services, where he holds positions on the Subcommittees on Capital Markets, Financial Institutions, and Oversight and Investigations. His legislative priorities reflect a longstanding focus on consumer protection and financial access. Early in his current term, he has sponsored bills addressing teacher tax fairness, student loan forgiveness, and modernizing food assistance delivery.
During his first congressional stint, Fields earned recognition as a staunch advocate for progressive causes, receiving perfect ratings from organizations supporting labor rights, abortion access, and public health. He advanced his agenda through committee work aimed at channeling capital to underserved communities and protecting consumers from financial industry abuses. Fields is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and maintains a reputation for personal integrity despite a contentious 1995 gubernatorial campaign and an unresolved 1997 incident captured on FBI surveillance tape.
