Background
Valerie Foushee was born on May 7, 1956. Before entering elected office, she worked for the Chapel Hill Police Department as a secretary from 1987 until 2008. Her involvement in public service began with her children's education, leading her to serve on the School Governance Council and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education.
Political career
Valerie Foushee began her public service on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education and the Orange County Board of Commissioners before serving in the North Carolina House of Representatives and the North Carolina Senate. A member of the Democratic Party, she was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 2023 to represent North Carolina's 4th congressional district. She is the first African American and the first woman to represent this district in Congress.
