Jesús G. "Chuy" García is a Democratic Representative from Illinois's 4th district who previously served as the first Mexican-American member of the Illinois State Senate.
Background
Jesús G. "Chuy" García was born on April 12, 1956. Before entering elected office, he served as the deputy commissioner of the Department of Water from 1984 to 1986 and worked as a campaign manager for labor organizer Rudy Lozano. During a period away from public office, he founded and served as the executive director of the Little Village Community Development Corporation, an organization now known as Enlace.
Political career
Jesús G. "Chuy" García began his political career in the Chicago City Council in 1986 and later became the first Mexican-American member of the Illinois State Senate in 1992. He also served on the Cook County Board of Commissioners from 2010 until his transition to federal office, and he ran for mayor of Chicago in 2015 and 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, he was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 2019 representing Illinois's 4th district.
