Steny H. Hoyer is a Democratic Representative from Maryland's 5th District who served twice as House Majority Leader and is currently the most senior Democrat in the House.
Background
Steny Hamilton Hoyer was born on June 14, 1939, and later became a practicing attorney. Before his election to Congress, he served as a staff member for U.S. Senator Daniel Brewster from 1962 to 1966. His early career also included serving as the first vice president of the Young Democrats of America and holding a position on the Maryland Board of Higher Education.
Political career
Steny H. Hoyer began his political career as a staffer for U.S. Senator Daniel Brewster before serving in the Maryland State Senate from 1966 to 1979, where he became the youngest president in the chamber's history. After serving on the Maryland Board of Higher Education, he was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in a 1981 special election. Representing Maryland's 5th congressional district, he has served as a member of the Democratic caucus for over four decades and began his 23rd term in 2025.
