About
Andy Harris is the U.S. representative for Maryland's 1st district and a Republican physician who is the only member of his party in Maryland's congressional delegation.
Background
Born in New York City, Andy Harris earned both his bachelor's degree in biology and his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University, later receiving a Master of Health Science from the same institution. He served in the Navy Medical Corps and the U.S. Naval Reserve, including active duty during Operation Desert Storm. Before entering politics, he worked as an anesthesiologist and associate professor at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he also served as the chief of obstetric anesthesiology.
Political career
Andy Harris began his political career in the Maryland Senate, where he represented the 9th district from 1999 to 2003 and the 7th district from 2003 until 2011. He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010 and has served as the representative for Maryland's 1st congressional district since 2011. In September 2024, he became the chair of the House Freedom Caucus.

Harris, Andy represents the 1st congressional district of MD in the U.S. House. Harris, Andy chairs the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies. They also serve on the House Committee on Appropriations and the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies. They have sponsored 11 bills in the current House, including H.R. 8646; H.R. 7339; H.R. 4229.
