Hakeem Jeffries is a Democratic Representative from New York's 8th District who serves as House minority leader and is the first African American to lead a party in either chamber of Congress.
Background
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Hakeem Jeffries earned a bachelor's degree from Binghamton University, a master's degree from Georgetown University, and a law degree from New York University. After serving as a federal law clerk, he worked in private practice at a law firm and later as a corporate litigator for Viacom and CBS. During his legal career, he also led the Black Attorneys for Progress and served as a director for the New York State Chapter of the National Association of Minority Contractors.
Political career
Hakeem S. Jeffries began his career in elected office serving three terms in the New York State Assembly from 2007 to 2012. He was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013 and is currently serving his seventh term representing New York's 8th congressional district. A member of the Democratic Party, he has served as the House minority leader and leader of the House Democratic Caucus since 2023, making him the first African American to lead a party in either chamber of Congress.
