Pramila Jayapal is a Democratic Representative from Washington's 7th district and the first Indian American woman to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Background
Born on September 21, 1965, Pramila Jayapal worked as a civil rights activist in Seattle before entering electoral politics. Following the September 11 attacks, she founded an immigrant advocacy group originally called Hate Free Zone, which later became OneAmerica. Under her leadership, the organization successfully sued to prevent the deportation of thousands of Somalis and worked to register new citizens to vote.
Political career
Before entering federal office, Pramila Jayapal served in the Washington State Senate representing the 37th legislative district from 2015 to 2017. She has served as the U.S. representative for Washington's 7th congressional district since 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, she is the first Indian American woman to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and the first Asian American to represent Washington at the federal level.
