Ro Khanna is a Democratic Representative from California's 17th District who previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the U.S. Department of Commerce under President Barack Obama.
Background
Ro Khanna was born in Philadelphia to Indian parents and attended the University of Chicago and law school. Before entering Congress, he worked as an intellectual property attorney, clerked for a federal appeals judge, and served as a Deputy Assistant Secretary in the U.S. Department of Commerce under President Barack Obama. He also held academic positions as a lecturer at Stanford University, Santa Clara University School of Law, and San Francisco State University.
Political career
Before his election to Congress, Ro Khanna served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary in the United States Department of Commerce under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2011 and was later appointed to the California Workforce Investment Board. A member of the Democratic Party, he was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 2017 after defeating an incumbent in the 2016 general election. He has since been reelected to represent California's 17th congressional district four times.
