Krishnamoorthi, Raja

Raja Krishnamoorthi represents Illinois's 8th congressional district and serves as ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services. As ranking member, he leads the Democratic opposition within the subcommittee, shaping investigations and questioning witnesses on matters affecting healthcare policy and financial regulation. He also serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the Select Committee on Strategic Competition with China. Krishnamoorthi is notably the first Indian American or person of South Asian descent to serve as ranking member or chair of any full committee in Congress.

Born in New Delhi and raised in Peoria, Illinois, Krishnamoorthi brings substantial legal and government experience to his oversight role. He graduated from Harvard and clerked for a federal judge in Illinois before working on Barack Obama's campaigns for the House and Senate, including contributions to Obama's 2004 Democratic National Convention keynote address. He later practiced law and served as a special assistant attorney general, helping establish Illinois's anti-corruption unit under Attorney General Lisa Madigan. His background as deputy state treasurer and vice-chairman of the Illinois Innovation Council, combined with his leadership of high-tech businesses, provides him with expertise in financial systems and economic development relevant to his subcommittee responsibilities.

First elected to Congress in 2016 to succeed Tammy Duckworth, Krishnamoorthi has built a legislative record focused on healthcare access, housing affordability, and consumer protection. His sponsored bills include measures to expand free school lunches, improve first-time homebuyer assistance, and prevent private bounty hunters from enforcing immigration law. As ranking member, he has positioned himself as a key Democratic voice on healthcare and financial oversight, wielding significant influence over subcommittee investigations and the direction of Democratic questioning during hearings. He has also served as an assistant whip, reflecting his standing within the Democratic caucus.
