Ted Lieu is a Democratic Representative from California's 36th District who has served in the House since 2015 and is a colonel in the Air Force Reserve Command.
Background
Born in Taiwan, Ted Lieu immigrated to the United States at age three and later earned two degrees from Stanford University followed by a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University. Before entering politics, he served as a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and spent four years on active duty in the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps. He continued his military service in the Air Force Reserve for over two decades, eventually reaching the rank of colonel.
Political career
Ted Lieu began his political career on the Torrance City Council in 2002 before serving in the California State Assembly from 2005 to 2010 and the California State Senate from 2011 to 2014. A member of the Democratic Party, he was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 2015, where he represented California's 33rd congressional district until 2023. Since 2023, he has represented the state's 36th congressional district and has served as vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus.
