Lee, Summer L.

Summer Lee represents Pennsylvania's 12th congressional district, which includes Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. As Ranking Member of the Federal Law Enforcement subcommittee within the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Lee leads the Democratic opposition on matters involving federal law enforcement agencies, their operations, and accountability. The Oversight Committee is one of Congress's most powerful bodies, wielding broad investigative authority and the ability to compel testimony and documents from federal agencies. As ranking member of a subcommittee, Lee shapes the Democratic strategy on federal law enforcement issues, though the majority party controls the subcommittee's agenda and schedule.

Lee's background positions her for this role. She served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 2019 to 2022, representing the 34th district and becoming the first Black woman to represent Southwestern Pennsylvania in the state legislature. She was elected to Congress in 2022, making her the first Black woman to represent Pennsylvania in the U.S. House. Lee is considered part of "The Squad," a group of young left-leaning Democrats known for progressive advocacy. She has also served as a social activist, bringing grassroots experience to her legislative work.

On the Federal Law Enforcement subcommittee, Lee has pursued oversight aligned with her progressive priorities. She sponsored the COINTELPRO Full Disclosure Act, seeking transparency about historical FBI surveillance programs, and the Eliminating Bias in Algorithmic Systems Act of 2026, addressing algorithmic discrimination in federal systems. These legislative efforts reflect her focus on government accountability and civil rights protections. Lee also serves on the Education and Workforce Committee and its subcommittees on early childhood education and health and employment issues, broadening her legislative portfolio beyond oversight.
