Background
Kweisi Mfume was born Frizzell Gerard Tate on October 24, 1948. Before his election to public office, he was a resident of Baltimore, where he later began his career in local government. His professional background prior to his time in the U.S. House of Representatives included serving as a member of the Baltimore City Council starting in 1978.
Political career
Kweisi Mfume began his political career in 1978 with his election to the Baltimore City Council. He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1986 and served from 1987 to 1996, when he resigned to lead the NAACP. After a period in the private sector and an unsuccessful 2006 Senate primary bid, he returned to his former House seat in 2020 following a special election.
Current focus
Mfume, Kweisi represents the 7th congressional district of MD in the U.S. House. Mfume, Kweisi is the ranking member of the Government Operations. They also serve on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
