About
Sarah McBride represents Delaware's at-large congressional district as a Democrat. She took office on January 3, 2025, becoming the first openly transgender member of Congress. McBride grew up in Wilmington and has spent decades in public service, including five years as a Delaware state senator from 2020 to 2025, where she passed landmark legislation on paid family and medical leave and Medicaid expansion. Before her state senate service, she worked for former Governor Jack Markell and the late Attorney General Beau Biden, and served as national spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign.
In Congress, McBride serves on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, including the Europe and Oversight and Intelligence subcommittees, and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Her legislative priorities reflect her long-standing advocacy for workers and families. She has sponsored bills including the Flexible Leave Act to expand family and medical leave, the READ AI Models Act, the Global Respect Act, and the FAIR Leave Act, among others. As a state senator, she successfully championed the Healthy Delaware Families Act, which provided paid family and medical leave to workers, and the Protect Medicaid Act of 2024, which unlocked over $175 million annually in new Medicaid funding.
McBride is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and has been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ equality, racial justice, workers' rights, and expanded social safety nets. She became the first openly transgender person to address a major party convention when she spoke at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, and published her memoir "Tomorrow Will Be Different" in 2018.
