Spartz, Victoria

Victoria Spartz is a Republican Representative for Indiana's 5th Congressional District, first assuming office on January 3, 2021. Born in Ukraine, she is the first Ukrainian-born member of the U.S. Congress. Before her federal service, she worked as a certified public accountant (CPA) at Big Four accounting firms, taught at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, and served as the Chief Financial Officer for the Indiana Attorney General. She also represented the 20th district in the Indiana Senate from 2017 to 2020.

In the House, Spartz serves on the Joint Economic Committee and has previously held assignments on the Judiciary and Education and the Workforce committees. Her legislative priorities are heavily influenced by her upbringing in the Soviet-era Ukraine, leading her to advocate for free-market solutions and fiscal hawk policies. She has sponsored legislation such as the Debt Commission Act of 2024 and the Restoring Rights of Physicians to Own Hospitals Act, reflecting her focus on national debt management and healthcare competition.

Spartz has established a reputation for independent and sometimes unpredictable voting behavior within her party. During the 2023 Speaker of the House elections, she notably voted present on several ballots before supporting the party nominee. She has also been a vocal figure regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine, initially serving as a key spokesperson on the conflict while maintaining a critical stance on government spending and oversight of foreign aid. Within the Republican caucus, she has held leadership roles such as Regional Policy Chair for the Republican Policy Committee.
