Schakowsky, Janice D.

Janice Schakowsky has represented Illinois' 9th Congressional District, which includes parts of Chicago and its northern suburbs, since 1999. Born in Chicago in 1944, she earned a degree in elementary education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before entering public office, she established herself as a consumer advocate, famously leading a successful campaign in 1969 to require freshness dates on food products. She later served as the director of the Illinois State Council of Senior Citizens and spent eight years in the Illinois General Assembly before her election to Congress.

In the House of Representatives, Schakowsky is a prominent member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, where she has served as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade. Her legislative work is heavily focused on consumer safety, healthcare access, and environmental protection. She has sponsored numerous bills, including the ALS Better Care Act and the Stop Unfair Medicaid Recoveries Act, reflecting her long-standing commitment to senior citizens and public health.
