About

Kim Schrier has served as the U.S. Representative for Washington's 8th Congressional District since 2019. Her district encompasses suburban areas east of Seattle and extends across the Cascade Range to rural communities in central Washington. Before entering Congress, Schrier worked as a pediatrician in Issaquah for nearly two decades, earning a bachelor's degree in astrophysics from UC Berkeley and her medical degree from UC Davis, followed by a residency at Stanford University. She first ran for office in 2018 after becoming dissatisfied with efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, making healthcare expansion the centerpiece of her campaign. She won that competitive race and has successfully defended her seat in subsequent elections, flipping the district blue for the first time in its history.

Schrier serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, where she holds positions on the Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade subcommittee, the Energy subcommittee, and the Health subcommittee. As the first pediatrician in Congress, she brings specialized expertise to healthcare policy. Her legislative priorities reflect her medical background and district needs, including efforts to lower prescription drug costs, support sustainable agriculture, address housing affordability, and promote consumer protections. She has sponsored over 40 bills addressing issues ranging from healthcare costs to agricultural climate action and vehicle safety standards.

Schrier is a member of the New Democrat Coalition and has emphasized bipartisan problem-solving throughout her tenure. She has worked across party lines on infrastructure investments and other practical solutions for her constituents. Living in Sammamish with her family, Schrier brings personal experience with healthcare challenges, having lived with Type 1 diabetes since age 16, which informs her advocacy for affordable healthcare access and coverage protections for people with pre-existing conditions.
