Department of Peacebuilding Act of 2025
Summary
H.R. 1111 would establish a new Department of Peacebuilding as a federal executive branch agency. The department would be led by a Secretary appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. If enacted, the department would work to develop policies preventing violence, support conflict resolution efforts, promote nonviolent strategies, conduct research on violence causes, provide peace education, and support community-based peace initiatives.
The bill would create several specialized offices within the department, including offices focused on peace education and training, domestic peacebuilding activities, international peacebuilding activities, technology for peace, arms control and disarmament, peacebuilding research, and human rights and economic rights. The department would establish grant programs for cultural diplomacy and exchanges in schools and nonprofit organizations to promote understanding between communities and nations.
The bill is currently under consideration by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. It would require passage by both chambers of Congress and presidential signature to become law.
