To authorize the extension of the supplemental security income program to American Samoa.

H.R. 1187 would authorize the Social Security Administration to extend the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program to residents of American Samoa. Currently, low-income individuals who are aged, blind, or disabled in American Samoa do not have access to these federal cash benefits, which are available to residents of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Northern Mariana Islands. If enacted, this bill would provide eligible American Samoans with monthly financial assistance to help meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.
