Department of Veterans Affairs Work-Study Act of 2005
Summary
H.R. 1207, the Department of Veterans Affairs Work-Study Act of 2005, aimed to expand the types of jobs available to veterans participating in the VA’s work-study program. The bill proposed adding new qualifying activities, such as providing job placement services at schools, assisting transitioning service members and their spouses with employment counseling, and supporting Senior ROTC programs. Additionally, it sought to establish a five-year pilot program to test the effectiveness of creating more work-study positions directly on school campuses.
For veterans and their families, this legislation was designed to provide more diverse employment opportunities while they pursued their education, making it easier to find work that directly supports the military community. By broadening the scope of eligible roles, the bill intended to improve the support services available to veterans on campus and help those leaving active duty better navigate the transition to civilian careers. While the bill received subcommittee hearings, it did not advance further to become law.
