Wounded Knee Massacre Memorial and Sacred Site Act
Summary
This law directs the Secretary of the Interior to complete all necessary actions to place approximately 40 acres of land at the Wounded Knee Massacre site in South Dakota into restricted fee status for the Oglala Sioux Tribe and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. The land, located in Oglala Lakota County on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, is historically significant as the site where more than 300 Lakota people were killed on December 29, 1890.
Under this law, the two tribes retain ownership of the land, which becomes part of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and falls under the civil and criminal jurisdiction of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. The law requires the land to be held and maintained as a memorial and sacred site in accordance with a covenant signed by both tribes in October 2022. The site is protected from commercial development and cannot be used for gaming.
