NICS Data Reporting Act of 2025

The NICS Data Reporting Act of 2025 would require the Department of Justice to publish annual reports containing demographic information about people who are found ineligible to purchase firearms based on background checks performed by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). This data would include characteristics such as age, gender, race, and other relevant demographics of those denied firearm purchases.

If enacted, this bill would increase transparency around firearm background check denials by making demographic data publicly available on an annual basis. This could help Congress, researchers, and the public better understand patterns in who is being denied firearm purchases and for what reasons. The bill has been approved by the House Judiciary Committee and is now eligible for a floor vote in the House of Representatives, though it would still need to pass the full House, the Senate, and receive presidential signature to become law.
