Quinault Indian Nation Land Transfer Act
Summary
The Quinault Indian Nation Land Transfer Act would transfer about 72 acres of land currently managed by the U.S. Forest Service to the Department of the Interior. The Interior Department would then take this land into trust for the Quinault Indian Nation, making it part of the tribe's reservation. This administrative transfer would give the tribe control over the specified lands in Washington State.
The bill includes a prohibition on gaming activities on the transferred land. Additionally, the Department of the Interior would be required to disclose any hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants present on the land before taking it into trust. However, the bill does not require the federal government to clean up or remediate any such contamination that may exist.
The bill passed the House of Representatives and is currently under review by the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. If enacted, the transfer would expand the Quinault Indian Nation's land holdings and give the tribe greater sovereignty over these acres, though the gaming restriction would limit certain economic development options on the transferred property.
