Sarvis Creek Wilderness Completion Act
Summary
H.R. 2734 would amend the Colorado Wilderness Act of 1993 to add approximately 6,817 acres of land to the existing Sarvis Creek Wilderness Area in the Routt National Forest near Steamboat Springs in northern Colorado. The expansion would protect subalpine forest habitats, wildlife including elk and native fish species, and critical watersheds that feed into the Yampa River. The land being added was originally intended for wilderness protection under the 1993 law but was excluded due to a past proposal to develop a ski area that has since been abandoned.
If enacted, the bill would preserve outdoor recreation opportunities including hunting, fishing, backcountry skiing, and hiking while maintaining tribal access for traditional, religious, and cultural purposes. The expansion would also allow the U.S. Forest Service to continue managing the area for fire, insect, and disease control. The bill has received support from state and local officials, tribal leaders, and conservation organizations, though it currently remains in committee and has not yet been voted on by the full House.
