Father's Equity Act

H.R. 2766, the Father’s Equity Act, seeks to simplify the process for children born abroad and out of wedlock to obtain U.S. citizenship through their American fathers. The bill would remove current legal requirements that the father must pledge financial support in writing until the child is 18 and that paternity be formally established by a court or legal acknowledgment before the child reaches adulthood. Additionally, the legislation clarifies that a child’s claim to citizenship can still be established even after the death of their parent or parents.
