To amend title II of the Social Security Act to eliminate the two-year waiting period for divorced spouse's benefits following the divorce.

H.R. 2780 proposes to change Social Security rules to allow a divorced person to claim benefits based on their former spouse’s work record immediately after the divorce is finalized. Under current law, if the former spouse has not yet claimed their own retirement benefits, the divorced individual must generally wait two years after the divorce before they can apply for those benefits. This bill would eliminate that two-year waiting period, providing eligible individuals with faster access to financial support.
