Disabled Public Safety Officers Fairness Act

H.R. 2970, the Disabled Public Safety Officers Fairness Act, would expand eligibility for federal disability benefits to include public safety officers who were permanently disabled in the line of duty prior to the enactment of the original 1990 disability law. Under current regulations, many officers injured before that date are ineligible for the federal lump-sum benefit provided to those who suffer catastrophic injuries while serving. If passed, this bill would allow these veteran officers or their families to apply for the same financial assistance currently available to more recently injured police officers, firefighters, and first responders.
