GEO Act
Summary
The Geothermal Energy Opportunity Act, or GEO Act, would modify federal law to establish a processing deadline for geothermal energy development. Specifically, the Department of Interior would be required to process applications for geothermal drilling permits and related authorizations within 60 days after completing all required environmental reviews and compliance procedures, including assessments under the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, and National Historic Preservation Act.
If enacted, this bill could potentially speed up geothermal energy projects by creating a firm timeline for permit decisions. Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source that generates electricity from heat within the Earth. By streamlining the permitting process, the bill aims to facilitate development of this alternative energy resource, though the 60-day deadline would only apply after all environmental and regulatory requirements have been fully completed.
The bill has passed committee review and is now eligible for a floor vote in the House. It would require presidential signature to become law.
