Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development, the Judiciary, the District of Columbia, and Independent Agencies Appropriations Act, 2006

This law, enacted for fiscal year 2006, provided the annual federal funding necessary to operate the Department of Transportation, the Department of the Treasury, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the federal judiciary. It authorized billions of dollars for practical infrastructure and social services, including repairs to the interstate highway system, grants for airport safety improvements, and funding for Amtrak.

For everyday citizens, the act maintained essential housing safety nets by funding Section 8 rental assistance and public housing for low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities. It also funded the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to process tax returns and the U.S. Postal Service to ensure continued mail delivery. Additionally, the bill included specific provisions to improve hurricane evacuation plans for the Gulf Coast and provided tuition support for residents of the District of Columbia.
