To amend the National Trails System Act to update the feasibility and suitability study originally prepared for the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail and provide for the inclusion of new trail segments, land components, and campgrounds associated with that trail, and for other purposes.
Summary
This law directs the Secretary of the Interior to update the official study of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail to determine if several additional routes and sites should be added to the protected trail system. These proposed additions include the Benge and Bell routes, various water routes, and the paths leading from collection forts to emigration depots across Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.
For the public, this legislation paves the way for a more complete and accurate historical preservation of the forced removal of the Cherokee Nation. If these segments are officially added following the study, it would allow for increased federal protection, improved historical signage, and better public access to these significant cultural and geographic landmarks.
