To provide for the establishment of separate campaign medals to be awarded to members of the uniformed services who participate in Operation Enduring Freedom and to members of the uniformed services who participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

This law required the President to create two distinct military awards: the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Iraq Campaign Medal. These medals were established to specifically recognize the service of military members who deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. By creating these separate honors, the government ensured that service members received specific recognition for their participation in these individual conflicts rather than receiving a general expeditionary medal.
