Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance Enhancement Act of 2005

The Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance Enhancement Act of 2005 permanently increased the maximum life insurance coverage available to military members from $250,000 to $400,000. To ensure families are informed of financial decisions, the law requires the military to notify a servicemember’s spouse if the member chooses to reduce their coverage or name a beneficiary other than their spouse or child. Additionally, the act simplified the program by requiring that insurance coverage amounts be selected in increments of $50,000.
