Prevent Identity Theft From Affecting Lives and Livelihoods (PITFALL) Act

The Prevent Identity Theft From Affecting Lives and Livelihoods (PITFALL) Act is designed to provide legal protections for victims of identity theft who have received an official "no-fault" letter from a state investigative agency. If enacted, the bill would shield these individuals from liability for unauthorized debts, electronic fund transfers, or fraudulent transactions associated with the theft. Additionally, it would require credit reporting agencies to remove fraudulent information from the victim's credit report and mandate that debt collectors cease collection efforts once they are presented with the state-issued letter.
