Violence Against Women and Department of Justice Reauthorization Act of 2005

This act reauthorizes and expands the original Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) to strengthen the legal and social safety net for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and dating violence. It provides significant federal funding for local law enforcement training, rape crisis centers, and specialized court programs to ensure that victims have access to justice and protective orders.

For everyday citizens, the law increases protections for vulnerable groups by providing transitional housing assistance, legal aid for victims, and new privacy safeguards to prevent the release of victims' information online. It also creates specific programs to protect children exposed to violence, enhances services for elderly and disabled victims, and establishes stricter regulations for international marriage brokers to prevent the abuse of immigrant spouses. Additionally, the act authorizes funding for the Department of Justice to improve DNA fingerprinting databases and support community policing initiatives aimed at reducing violent crime.
