Miccosukee Reserved Area Amendments Act
Summary
H.R. 504, the Miccosukee Reserved Area Amendments Act, was a bipartisan bill passed by Congress that would have expanded the Miccosukee Tribe's reserved area within Everglades National Park to include the Osceola Camp, a tribal village that has been occupied by the Miccosukee Tribe since the 1930s. The bill would have formally recognized this area as part of the tribe's reserved lands, which were originally authorized in 1998 but did not include Osceola Camp.
The bill required the Secretary of the Interior, working with the Miccosukee Tribe, to develop and implement flood protection measures for structures within Osceola Camp within two years of enactment. The Miccosukee Tribe has a residential community in this area with infrastructure for water supply and wastewater treatment, but the community experiences periodic flooding. The bill aimed to address this flooding risk while allowing critical ecosystem restoration efforts in the Everglades to proceed without displacing the tribal community.
