Public Lands Military Readiness Act of 2025
Summary
The Public Lands Military Readiness Act of 2025 would extend federal protections on military training lands in three states. Specifically, it would extend the withdrawal and reservation of Fort Greely and Fort Wainwright Training Ranges in Alaska, and the McGregor Range at Fort Bliss in New Mexico until November 6, 2051. It would also extend protections for Fort Irwin military land in California until December 31, 2051. These withdrawals prevent the lands from being used for mining, drilling, or other commercial appropriation under federal public land laws.
The bill would make technical updates to the legal descriptions of the McGregor Range and Fort Irwin lands to ensure accurate boundary documentation. These changes are administrative in nature and intended to clarify existing land boundaries rather than expand military holdings.
For citizens, this bill would preserve large tracts of public land exclusively for military training and readiness purposes for the next 25 years. This means these lands would remain unavailable for other uses such as mining claims, oil and gas leasing, or recreational development. The bill has passed the House and is currently under review by the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, where it would need approval before potentially becoming law.
