Jane's Law

H.R. 5188, known as Jane’s Law, would make it a federal crime to cross state lines or leave the country to avoid paying a court-ordered property settlement from a divorce. This law would apply to cases where the unpaid distribution exceeds $5,000, carrying a penalty of fines and up to two years in prison. Additionally, individuals convicted under this act would be required to pay full restitution to their former spouse for the total amount of the unpaid property settlement.
