TWISTER Act

The Tornado and Windstorm Innovation for Safety and Tracking Enhancement Research (TWISTER) Act aims to update federal weather research goals to better protect communities from destructive storms. It proposes to amend the Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Act of 2017 by expanding the scope of the national tornado warning improvement program. Specifically, the bill seeks to enhance the ability of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to predict fast-developing storm systems, such as derechos and nighttime tornadoes, which often pose the greatest risk to public safety.

If enacted, the legislation would direct federal researchers to focus on improving warning systems for geographic areas that do not historically experience frequent tornadoes but are seeing shifting weather patterns. It also emphasizes the development of more accurate forecasting for evening and overnight storms when residents are most vulnerable. By investing in these advanced tracking technologies and communication tools, the bill aims to provide families and local emergency officials with more lead time to seek shelter and prepare for severe wind events.
