Safe Access in Fire Emergencies Act of 2006

The Safe Access in Fire Emergencies Act of 2006 (H.R. 5339) would require the Consumer Product Safety Commission to establish national safety standards for window bars used in residential buildings. Under this bill, all newly manufactured or installed window bars would be required to include an emergency release mechanism that can be operated manually from the inside to allow for a quick exit during a fire. Additionally, the bill would require manufacturers to provide clear instructions on how to install and operate these release systems and would create a national system to track injuries or deaths related to window bars.
