Section 8 Voucher Reform Act of 2006

This bill proposes several changes to the Section 8 housing voucher program to streamline how low-income families access and use rental assistance. It would allow tenants to move into units more quickly by permitting assistance payments to begin even if a home has minor, non-life-threatening maintenance issues that need repair. Additionally, the bill simplifies how tenant income is calculated and gives local housing agencies the flexibility to offer one-time downpayment grants to help families purchase a home instead of receiving monthly rent subsidies.
