Parkway Safety and Reinvestment Act
Summary
The Parkway Safety and Reinvestment Act proposes to authorize the Secretary of the Interior to collect and spend revenue generated from speed safety cameras on highways within the National Park System. Currently, fines from federal traffic violations are often directed to general funds or specific victim programs; this bill would instead allow those funds to be reinvested directly into the park units where the citations were issued. The money would be used for the construction and maintenance of parkways, parking facilities, and other safety-related infrastructure.
If enacted, the bill would grant the National Park Service the authority to issue citations and assess civil penalties based on speed camera data, provided that drivers are given notice and an opportunity for a hearing. The primary goal of the legislation is to address persistent speeding issues on major federal commuter routes, such as the George Washington Memorial Parkway, while creating a self-sustaining funding source for road repairs and safety improvements without requiring additional taxpayer appropriations.
