AI for Secure Networks Act
Summary
H.R. 7294, the AI for Secure Networks Act, would direct the Department of Commerce to conduct a comprehensive study on how artificial intelligence technology impacts the security of telecommunications networks. The study would examine how AI can enhance network security through real-time threat detection, improve resilience and efficiency, strengthen security in open radio access networks and virtualized environments, and identify potential cybersecurity risks posed by AI misuse. The Commerce Department would consult with the Federal Communications Commission and industry stakeholders during the research process.
Within one year of enactment, the Secretary of Commerce would be required to submit a report to Congress detailing the study's findings and may include recommendations for future legislative action. The bill would allow for public comment on the report before final submission. If enacted, this legislation would provide the federal government with detailed information about AI's role in protecting critical telecommunications infrastructure that Americans rely on for phone calls, texts, financial services, and emergency communications. The bill is currently under consideration by the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
