ICE Standards Act
Summary
The ICE Standards Act would impose new professional and constitutional requirements on federal immigration enforcement officers. The bill would require immigration officers to complete annual training on use of force, de-escalation, constitutional rights, and First Amendment protections. It would mandate that officers wear clearly visible identification and wear body cameras and vehicle dashboard cameras during enforcement operations. The bill would also establish restrictions on where immigration enforcement can occur, prohibiting operations in sensitive locations like houses of worship, schools, hospitals, and courthouses except in exigent circumstances. Additionally, the bill would require officers to verify citizenship status before arrest and would mandate that local law enforcement agencies receive at least one day's notice before federal immigration operations in their jurisdiction. These measures would apply to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers. The bill is currently under consideration in the House Committee on the Judiciary and would require presidential signature to become law if passed by both chambers.
